Lessons I learned pivoting my business
Have you ever found yourself feeling meh about your business...even when you're bringing in clients and making money?
And you've had an idea that reignites the passion you had when you first started your business...except it feels really different from what you're doing.
But then the crushing weight of, "there's no way I can pivot my business like that" hits you.
I'm here to tell you it doesn't have to be that way. You can shift your business, and you don't have to burn it down to do it.
Here's my story:
I took a different approach than a lot of women business owners. I dove in to full-time, without starting as a side business. I literally built everything as I was going.
Which meant there was a lot of pivoting, and a lot of feeling uncomfortable doing it.
Lesson 1:
You don't have to make a big announcement every time you make a change. This was my biggest lesson. I'd get super excited and announce my "big change"...and then, because I was still evolving my business, I kept changing. So I felt like I was messing up every time I changed.
Lesson 2:
We change, and that's ok! What was good for us at one time, doesn't have to be the thing we do all the time. This is especially relevant when you're known as an expert in one area, and you want to move to something else. For me, it was moving from offering marketing strategy (which I have two decades of experience in) to coaching and strategy.
We also don't need to feel ashamed when we pivot or make a change. If you're interested, I wrote a blog about this.
Lesson 3:
Shifting your business can be just that, a shift. You don't have to literally burn your biz down and start fresh.
This was hard for me, because that's what I liked to do and what I thought I had to do.
Instead, you can create a new service. Something that is aligned with that idea you have.
And you don't have to announce it on social media.
You can reach out in more subtle ways:
An email to your list
Personal email/message to past clients who would be a good fit for the service
Let your inner circle know - those women who are your biggest fans and refer people to you all the time
Lesson 4:
This may have been my biggest lesson: when you stop feeling passionate about what you're doing, the long term impact on the sustainability of your business is greater than the risks you'll take offering something new.
If you've been feeling less passionate about your current services and want to explore making the shift, I'd love to chat. You can book a call with me anytime!
